Consciousness is a complex concept to understand, as it refers to the state or quality of being aware of one’s own existence, sensations, thoughts, surroundings, and experiences. To put it simply, consciousness is an awareness of internal and external existence, or the state of being awake and aware of one’s surroundings. There are multiple avenues that make up consciousness and how we can describe it, although many still end with unanswered questions.

There are three levels to consciousness: the subconscious, the conscious, and the superconscious. Each level of consciousness represents a significant degree of intensity or awareness. The first and lowest level of consciousness is the subconscious. This level of consciousness is low in awareness, and is what makes up our dreams when we sleep at night. Dreaming is considered to be a type of consciousness. Other forms of consciousness include hallucinations, hypnosis, meditation, sleep, and states that are induced by psychoactive drugs. The subconscious is consumed with every thought or experience that we have ever faced in our lifetime. The next level of consciousness is referred to as the conscious state. This is the level in which we can receive and perceive guidance, and is the rational state that guides our daily decisions. These decisions can often be influenced by outside factors and opinions of others. The superconscious is the last and highest level of consciousness. Intuition and heightened mental clarity flow from the superconscious awareness. The superconscious level of consciousness is seeing all things as part of a whole. In superconscious-ness the problem and the solution are also seen as one.
